New works created over the course of a single week--THEATER in a FLASH!
A new effort and format for Patrick's Cabaret, Lightning Rod is a week-long project creating "flash theater." Open to anyone wishing to participate, teams of participants will spend six days (throughout the week of April 9th) making and then performing devised (collaboratively created) work that responds to the immediacy of that week, generating performance from the prompt: "What needs to be said this week?" Drawing from news headlines, and what's on the hearts and minds of artists in our community, this unique event will be a lightning rod to capture the electricity in the air.
Seeking Writers, Directors, & Performers
Various commitments Sunday, April 9th to Saturday, April 15th
Patrick’s Cabaret and Guest Producer Kat Purcell invite artists to participate in whatever way makes the most sense for them. The production will assemble a diverse team of artists to collaborate with only a few days to create works that respond to the current week’s events. We’re mixing the pot; both as a generative practice and a community involvement exercise. Come play a theater game, with serious consequences.
SUNDAY ALL CALL - Everyone will participate in the Community Gathering on Sunday afternoon. We will get to know one another, play theater games, and begin devising (collaboratively creating) short works in small groups that respond to news articles about recent events. - Afternoon 1:00-5:00 PM, with snacks and breaks provided.
MONDAY - Six Writers will work furiously to use what we generated on Sunday to create short works (20-30 minutes long each) for a small group of performers. - On your own time, with the opportunity to come to the Writer’s Room at Intermedia Arts to make work in fellowship with others.
TUESDAY & WEDNESDAY - Six Directors and their Performers will rehearse their pieces together, getting just a few hours each to bring these new short works to life. - Exact times to be determined by participants’ schedules, each rehearsal will be approximately 3 hours.
THURSDAY - Each group of Directors & Performers complete a tech rehearsal. - Each tech rehearsal will be approximately 45 minutes, including running the piece. Exact times to be determined by participants’ schedules.
FRIDAY & SATURDAY - Each night 3 short performances will be presented (6 total between 2 nights). Each night of performances is followed by a conversation uniting aritsts and audience to reflect on the role of the artist in a time of challenge. - Each team of performers will perform on one evening. Directors and writers are encouraged to attend on the evening their pieces are presented to participate in a post-show discussion.
