Seeking Artists for Controlled Burn 2017
Controlled Burn: queer performance for a world on fire
Thursday, Friday, & Saturday, Oct 5-7, 2017 at 7:30 PM-9:30 PM
Produced by Patrick’s Cabaret
At Intermedia Arts (2822 Lyndale Ave S, Minneapolis, MN 55408)
CALL FOR PERFORMERS:
Named for the practice of burning a prairie to promote new growth, Controlled Burn is a space for queer rage, revolution, and reclamation, aimed at regeneration. In 2017, Controlled Burn will be co-curated by Nicole M. Smith, Rosa Garcia, and Dua Saleh.
Seeking queer-identified artists, especially queer artists of color and queer artists with disabilities, to present their own short-form works (up to 15 minutes) of fiery work that speaks to the creative destruction and radical rebirth of our current social, political, and cultural climate. 18 acts will be selected, with 6 performing each night.
MANDATORY DATES & TIMES FOR ARTISTS:
Call for Performances is only 1 night of the following: Thursday, Friday, & Saturday, Oct 5-7, 2017 at 6:30 PM-9:30 PM
***Please note: Each artist will perform on only 1 night, and is expected to attend from call at 6:30 PM until the end of the show around 9:30 PM.
Call for Mandatory Tech Rehearsals is only 1 night of the following: Tuesday & Wednesday, Oct 3-4, 2017 at 6:00 PM-9:30 PM
***Please note: Each artist will be required to attend mandatory tech rehearsal for approximately 30 minutes on only 1 night, and is free to go after completing their tech.
Proposals are a simple online form that will take you less than 15 minutes to complete. We’re especially interested in combining both emerging artists who want to present their work on a professional stage, and experienced artists who want to expand their practice in the context of a particularly open-minded community arts institution.
Six acts will be presented each evening. An act may include more than one artist, however each ACT will share one performance fee. Artist payments include 3 factors:
Each ACT will be paid a fee of $50/night, guaranteed unless the show is canceled, the artist does not perform, or the artist leaves before the end of the event.
Additionally, artists will receive advanced tickets to sell for the run of the show. Artists can offer ticket sales to their friends and fans at a discounted rate of $10/each, and keep all of that money--it goes directly into their pockets, and Patrick's Cabaret never needs to touch it. Each act for Controlled Burn will get 2 tickets to sell.
Finally, if the event reaches 80% or more capacity (meaning, 80% of available seats are sold), artists will receive a 50% split of the box office from remaining tickets sold at the night's average ticket price.
A typical act can then expect to make $70 for 1 night, plus additional revenue if the event is more than 80% full. Artist payments are made via check, and will be mailed to the address you provided as part of the application process within about a week of the performance, after we have processed box office receipts.
